This Medical Directive Applies to the following sites: 
All SJH sites

This medical directive provides the authority to communicate an order to the Occupational Health Nurses

(OHN) to administer the seasonal influenza vaccination to staff of St. Joseph’s Health Care London. This

may include nurses educated through Occupational Health and Safety Services to provide the vaccine to

their peers. If the nurse is a registered practical nurse (RPN), (s)he may only administer the vaccine when

there is a registered nurse (RN) readily available to assist in the event of an adverse reaction. The

seasonal influenza vaccine may be administered following appropriate assessment of the staff member,

determining there will be a beneficial effect and identifying any drug allergies. The OHN may then

administer the agent by following the Medication Practice Standard as per the College of Nurses of



Employees, persons with practicing privileges, contract workers, students and volunteers who carry on

activities within St. Joseph’s Health Care London will have access to the seasonal influenza vaccine

through Occupational Health and Safety
